Mercedes to curb model expansion

The exponential model expansion at Mercedes is unlikely to continue further, said U.S. operations chief Ernst Lieb. "We're going to make the product lineup we have work," Lieb told The Car Connection in a recent interview.
Over the past few years, Mercedes has expanded into several niche markets with vehicles like the R-Class crossover and CLS-Class four-door coupe — a far cry from the days when launching the original C-Class was controversial. For the time being, Lieb said there are "no plans" to expand the range further. Although there have been rumors about Mercedes bringing its B-Class to the United States, Lieb comments could be viewed as evidence against this possibility. One area Mercedes hopes will see significant growth in America over the coming years is diesels, with the introduction of its ultra-clean Bluetec vehicles.
